\u00c0 partir des oeuvres, de la correspondance et des autres \u00e9crits de Herman Melville, Henry Adams ou encore John La Farge, ce premier volet du symposium international intitul\u00e9 \u00ab American Writers in the Pacific: From Melville to Adams and La Farge \u00bb entend poser les jalons d\u2019une r\u00e9flexion centr\u00e9e sur les dimensions historique et litt\u00e9raire mais aussi symbolique, voire id\u00e9ologique, de la narration des odyss\u00e9es trans-pacifiques men\u00e9es par ces illustres hommes de lettres et artistes originaires du continent nord-am\u00e9ricain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

L\u2019\u00e9v\u00e9nement fera converger approches civilisationnelles, perspectives anthropologiques et observations stylistiques, afin d\u2019interroger la posture qui a pu \u00eatre celle de ces observateurs ext\u00e9rieurs, entre regard analytique et d\u00e9marche testimoniale. Le nouveau cadre insulaire dans lequel ils \u00e9voluent \u00e0 leur \u00e9poque, aux confins des mers du Sud, par-del\u00e0 les barri\u00e8res culturelles et ethniques, fera aussi l\u2019objet de la r\u00e9flexion conjointe men\u00e9e par les intervenants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orr (University of Portland), Professeurs de litt\u00e9rature am\u00e9ricaine, ainsi que Florent Atem, Ma\u00eetre de conf\u00e9rences en langues et litt\u00e9ratures anglaises et anglo-saxonnes \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de la Polyn\u00e9sie fran\u00e7aise, \u00e9galement organisateur de
